Advocate for Oklahoma Families and Support TEFAP and SNAP

Advocacy is an important part of the mission of the Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma. While distributing food helps meet immediate needs, advocacy focuses on creating long-term solutions to hunger by supporting policies and programs that help families access nutritious food. By educating the public and engaging with elected officials, the Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma works to ensure that the needs of our neighbors facing hunger are represented in policy decisions.

Two of the most important federal nutrition programs are The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

TEFAP provides food purchased by the federal government to food banks, pantries, and meal programs across the country. In simple terms, TEFAP helps stock the shelves of organizations like the Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma so they can provide nutritious food to individuals and families experiencing hunger.

SNAP, formerly known as food stamps, helps eligible individuals and families purchase groceries at local stores. SNAP gives people the flexibility to buy the foods their households need while supporting local businesses and economies.

These programs are critically important because they work together to reduce hunger. TEFAP helps food banks provide emergency food assistance, while SNAP helps families afford groceries on their own. For many seniors, veterans, children, working families, and individuals facing unexpected hardships, these programs can mean the difference between having enough food and going hungry. They not only improve health and well-being but also strengthen communities by ensuring that people have the resources they need to thrive.
