Meet Joaquinn Juarez-If you’ve spent time around our mobile markets or summer meals programs, you may already recognize Joaquinn. At just 23 years old, Joaquinn has become a familiar and friendly face to many of the Oklahomans we serve—especially the kids who excitedly call out, “You’re the truck man!” Joaquinn’s journey is one of resilience, determination, and community. Raised by a single mother in North Tulsa, he grew up participating in programs at the Dream Center—early experiences that helped shape his path. As a teenager, he began working as a busboy at the Gathering Place. What started as an entry-level job quickly grew into something more as local chefs recognized his dedication and talent, trusting him with greater responsibilities in the kitchen. “I’m just a kid from the North,” Joaquinn says, “and I feel like I’m able to give back to a community that’s given so much to me.”
From student to standout chef-Joaquinn’s passion led him to the Tulsa Tech Culinary Program, where he honed his skills and began making a name for himself. He earned second place in the statewide SkillsUSA competition, becoming one of the youngest chefs at the time to achieve that recognition. A graduate of the Oklahoma Restaurant Association’s ProStart program, Joaquinn didn’t just participate—he thrived. “After 15 years in the classroom as a chef instructor, few students have left as lasting an impression as Joaquinn Juarez, known to me as JJ. From the moment he entered the program, JJ demonstrated a servant’s heart, unwavering integrity, and a genuine passion for learning, remembers one of his teachers Carly Austin, Outreach Coordinator at Tulsa tech. “He consistently sought opportunities to grow, challenge himself, and expand his culinary knowledge. During his time at Tulsa Tech, JJ fully embraced every opportunity available to him. Tulsa Tech provided the pathway, but it was JJ’s character, work ethic, and culinary talent that truly set him apart. Those qualities caught the attention of leaders in the industry and ultimately opened the door to an interview with the Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma, where he continues to serve the community. What began as an opportunity became a career dedicated to helping others—a journey that continues to inspire those who know him.”
Today, Chef Joaquinn continues to bring that same drive and heart to his role at the Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma, where he has worked for more than four years. Under the mentorship of chefs and leaders like Chief Culinary Officer Jeremy Johnson and CEO Jeff Marlow, Joaquinn has continued to grow—not only as a culinary professional, but as a community leader. For Joaquinn, food has always been about more than what’s on the plate—it’s about people. Whether he’s helping prepare delicious healthy meals or connecting with families during summer meal distributions, Joaquinn embodies the spirit of service that defines our mission. His story is a powerful reminder that when communities invest in young people, the impact can ripple outward in extraordinary ways.
As our Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma dedicated staff heads into summer to help feed thousands of kids in need, we’re reminded that the power of food goes far beyond nourishment. It creates opportunity. It builds community. And sometimes, it brings a young busboy full circle—back to serve the very community that helped shape him.
