Our goal to end childhood hunger received a tremendous boost with this special grant from Chik-fil-A and Feeding America. These special grant funds will go directly to the Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma’s Food for Kids Programs and will help us provide thousands of meals to Oklahoma children! Our Food for Kids program includes our Backpack, School Pantry and Mobile Pantry programs along with other local child and feeding efforts. Oklahoma is one of the nation’s most food-insecure areas for young children and we are trying to change that. 1 in 4 children struggle daily with hunger. What you might not realize is only 15% of eligible schools offer all students no-cost meals, compared to the national average of 45%. Chronic food insecurity impacts the physical, emotional and cognitive development of children.
As a result of our Food for Kids program, we have heard countless stories of relief and gratitude from neighbors in need who need help for their families. Katelyn, a young mother of 3 small children shared when she and her husband were both laid off, “The first time I came to the pantry, it made me feel I had a shoulder to lean on. We no longer had to make the choice between rent or food.”
