Strengthening Communities Through Agriculture and Youth Leadership

The Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma recently attended the Oklahoma Youth Expo (OYE), where staff had the opportunity to connect with students involved in FFA and 4‑H inside the swine barn. Through these conversations, students shared the hard work, dedication, and responsibility that goes into raising their animals, as well as the importance of giving back to their communities.

While at OYE, the Food Bank also worked to secure pig donations that will be processed at Walke Brothers Meat Company. The processed pork will be turned into protein-rich pork sticks for the Food Bank’s Backpack Program, which helps provide nutritious food to children facing food insecurity. This effort is made possible through a partnership with the Oklahoma Farm Bureau, highlighting the strong connection between agriculture, youth leadership, and community support. We are especially grateful to Brian Marlin for helping lay the foundation for these partnerships, connecting the Food Bank with Walke Brothers, and generously donating 10 pigs each month to support the protein snack initiative.

Additionally, programs like the Oklahoma Pork Partners Derby—led by partners including the Oklahoma Pork Council—help expand access for students who may not otherwise have the means to show livestock. By providing financial support, mentorship, and hands-on experience, the Derby empowers youth to develop responsibility, confidence, and valuable professional skills. The Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma has plans to collaborate with the Oklahoma Pork Council on this initiative to help further expand its reach, aligning with the Food Bank’s mission to strengthen communities, support the next generation, and create meaningful opportunities that make a lasting impact.
